X-MEN #12:REMY:  “Ah, old habits.  No flirtin’ here.  I was meaning t’have a word wit’ya, neh?  ‘Bout what’s been goin’ on an’ all—me talking t’you ‘bout my wife Bella Donna— you tellin’ me how you really feel about that Longshot boy.”ROGUE:  “Listen, Cajun— Remy— Ah don’t know what Ah’m feeling, shugah— Ah don’t know what’s going t’happen between us— Just gonna wait an’ see which way the wind blows.”Fabian Nicieza took over with this issue and I think I would have picked up on it, even if I hadn’t seen the writer’s credit, because Nicieza (at least with his work at Marvel) is one of those writers I associate continuity with, so him bringing up the issues between Remy and Rogue here (Bella Donna and Longshot—though, I didn’t notice anything in particular between Longshot and Rogue in the Mojo arc just before this that would warrant Remy bringing it up) was excellent.  No, it wasn’t that long ago that they went to New Orleans, but it hardly came up at all in that final Mojoverse storyline, like it was going to be swept under the rug for years. The artist also changed here, from Jim Lee to Art Thibert, but there’s still very much a feel of, “Hey!  Keep drawing like Lee did!”  It’s still very ’90s art (even though you can tell it’s a different artist, it’s just slightly different) but, whatever.  I grew up on this stuff, I knew what I was getting. And I can’t say I want to complain too hard because this page is just all kinds of cuteness!  Sure, the poses are kind of awkward (who stands like that??) but Rogue yanking on Remy’s bandana while they’re talking, making it playful, even as she says she’s not sure which way she’s going yet.I mean, sure, I want makeouts IMMEDIATELY, but I actually really like this Rogue and I’m really enjoying the progression of their relationship and it’s been nice to have a string of writers I really like on the title.  (Claremont, then Lee doing plots with Lobdell doing dialogue, now Nicieza.)  I can see why it was such a huge hit with this book.

X-MEN #8:“There is so much of the past that remains a mystery.”“We ain’t talkin’ about the past, shugah— we’re talkin’ here and now.  And for the moment, Gambit walks along the side of angels.”I really enjoy that a lot of the whole pie-in-the-face thing got turned into a way to show Bishop that things are okay in the here and now, that you can’t worry about what might or might not happen too much.  In the here and now, these are people you can trust. Also, for someone who just a few pages ago practically ran away when Gambit so much as reached a hand out towards her, she certainly is comfortable draping herself all over him.………I’m not complaining, by the way.

X-MEN #8:“Is this wise?”“Keep laughing or she’ll kill us.”I know I shouldn’t find this as delightful as I do, but!  Rogue spent all that time making the pie and the implication being that she definitely already feels something for Remy, but then HOLY SHIT KEEP LAUGHING AND MAYBE WE’LL LIVE THROUGH THIS because you do not mess with Rogue and I just.I love the absolute turn on a dime emotions Bishop goes through here.  HE IS TRYING TO WARN THEM OF A LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION and he’s pretty sure he KNOWS WHO THE TRAITOR IS and already LeBeau is ready to fight with him PRETTY MUCH PROVING HIS POINT and then Rogue gets a pie to the face and AHAHAHAHA THAT’S HILARIOUS, no, nevermind that the traitor is still in your midst, there’s a pie in someone’s face!!p.s.  Remy saying, pft, you can’t kill me, I’ve just been informed that I’m going to outlive you all~ is A REALLY HORRIBLE COMMENT.  I think I’m in love all over again.

There is pretty much nothing about this that I don’t love.  Rogue’s ’90s dress is amazing.  I love it both with and without irony. But the best. The best.Is Logan and Jubilee deciding to “tag along”, because Rogue’ll be lucky if Remy manages to take her to a Taco Bell (JUBILATION LEE, HOW I LOVE YOU) and then Hank pops up and says HI I’LL COME, TOO and, sure, it’s partly about looking after Rogue, but mostly you can tell. You can tell. That this is one giant LET’S FUCK WITH GAMBIT, IT’LL BE HILARIOUS.And it was.  It really, really was.Nothing warms my heart like the X-Men taking joy in fucking with each other.  Or Remy saying JESUS I THOUGHT WE WERE THE X-MEN NOT THE BRADY BUNCH.  lolz.
