I WILL SHIP THEM IN HELL.  It’s kind of amazing, because they really didn’t have more than a handful of episodes to build up the relationship, certainly they didn’t even interact that much as themselves without greater plot machinations motivating them, AND YET.  I WILL SHIP THEM IN HELL STILL.

A lot of it, of course, is their incredible final scene, where Naru’s feelings for him were so gut wrenchingly heartbreaking as he was dying in her arms, the tragedy of it, how they could have had something real if things had maybe just gone a little differently.  A lot of it was that she obviously got through to Nephrite on a real level, got through Beryl’s influence on him, showed that the Shitennou had moments of redemption even in the anime.  It’s hard not to feel for that.

Part of me likes to think that, in the future, in Crystal Tokyo, maybe King Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity could revive the Shitennou (because the anime doesn’t say that they COULDN’T be Endymion’s Generals, just that they never got into it) and he and Naru could meet when she was an adult and maybe get their happy ending together.  He meets her again with a smile and asks to take her out for that parfait they never had time for before, then they fall in love again, and HAPPY ENDING SMOOCHES.  Shut up, I told you I’d ship them in hell!
