chenipan asked you:I started reading MKR and, boy, that was a great decision! Thanks for your input on the different translations, considering that I might have been too paranoid to try it out if that weren’t the case. I hate that it seems to have left less of an impression on you, because…
Hun, if you want shipping feels watch.the.anime! I’m a shipper girl as well so I know the feeling of wanting that special ship to make your anime brighter. :D
FIRST SEASON HAS WONDERFUL EMERAUDE/ZAGATO. WONDERFUL I SAY!
SECOND SEASON HAS SO MUCH AWESOME SHIPPING! HIKARUXLANTIS, FUUXFERIO, UMIXASCOT/CLEF, CALDINA/LAFARGA!
For me the anime comes over the manga any day.
COME AT ME BROS!I’ve been wondering about the anime! It’s so long for a six-volume manga, so I’m wary of there being a lot of filler to it and I’m generally a manga > anime type of person, but! MKR was one of the anime series that CLAMP was involved with, wasn’t it? So that intrigues me.
OH, SO I’M NOT WRONG TO BE KIND OF FEELING ZAGATO/EMERAUDE? Because she looks so young and I’m not sure I was supposed to be feeling that….
*wary* I came pre-attached to Lantis/Eagle, but apparently I should be able to ship Lantis/Hikaru/Eagle at least? I haven’t yet met anyone I would ship with Umi (and Clef is so hard to ship, because he looks so young!) but I AM WAITING because I think Umi might be my favorite of the trio (though, Fuu is seriously growing on me and Hikaru is ADORABLE) and I would be all over having a ship for her!UMIxCLEF UMIxCLEF UMIxCLEF -
*clears throat*
UH, that is to say, with Umi there is a CHOICE OF TWO SHIPS and the fact that in Cephiro age and apperance have very little to do with each other and you can change it at will if you have the will is KEY TO BOTH XD And this is the one I follow with all my heart and FAR TOO MANY WORDS because they spark off each other, and they make each other better - get to the Thank You scene in volume two and see if you ship it? And just, uh, if you want a visual of Clef grown up look at the OVA version - which is TOTAL GLORIOUS CRACK but Clef’s got an older form in that and he is (SO VERY PRETTY) UH. YES. *cough*
The other is Ascot, and I fully support the idea he has a crush/loves Umi, but it wouldn’t WORK - she’s too strong willed, and he’s too shy, she’d accidentally squash him all the time!
OR, OR, you can always go the femslash route, which would also be RATHER EASY with Umi with Tarta or with Tatra. XD Though I never see that anywhere. ^^;
I love the anime - there IS filler, especially in the first series, and it’s not anything like so pretty, but I love the voice actors and, gah, so much more fodder for shipping. XD I love the manga best, but as a supplement~
(I’m sorry, I’ve been watching the anime ALL DAY, the feelings are kind of EXPLODING OUT OF ME ALL OVER THE HOUSE at this point. XD)
I am leaving this on my blog to come back to in reference, for when I get a bit further in. But also to say, I looked up Clef in the OAV and, OKAY, YES, I COULD SHIP THAT MUCH MORE EASILY. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to get over the visual, because I did it with Eriol/Kaho in CCS (but, then, we knew what Clow looked like and it was a pretty safe bet that that’s what Eriol was going to look like when he finally aged up, so I had a much stronger reference there, but also I don’t think Eriol and Kaho did anything while he was in that child’s body) but having a visual is a big step towards helping with that.
I am also DEFINITELY not opposed to some femslash in this series! Like, Presea/Hikaru is already pushing my buttons somewhat (because SERIOUSLY) and I’m not sure I could pick just two of the trio to ship, since they’re such an adorable unit together, but I would definitely be willing to be convinced.
*eyes the anime curiously*
A post about my intense love for MamoUsa
Let me explain to you my feelings for this
life ruiningperfect couple in the most incoherent manner possible.(WARNING: THIS IS SUPER LONG AND FULL OF CURSING AND CAPS. LIKE LOTS AND LOTS OF CAPS. ALSO PICTURES. AND CAPS. ALSO, THIS IS FOR FUN. HA HAHA. SO IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, I FRANKLY DO NOT CARE. DISCLAIMER DONE.)
I’m doing this for the manga first and I’m starting with the Silver Millennium and if you have no idea what’s going on then I have NOTHING TO SAY
So. Well. I needed this on my blog forever and ever.
If you and I should ever meet again let us live together for one year. My heart is the inverse of yours… you are kind, and pure, and honest. And I am sure that is how you will continue to grow up. Your heart will remain pure. So, if we should ever meet again I will try my hardest to learn to love you. Just for one year. And after that year if I can consider you ‘special’ you will have won, and I will not kill you. But if I decide that I cannot consider you special to me, if I cannot distinguish between you and that corpse, then…I will kill you. And so, today I will let you go.
❀ Happy Birthday, Kimberley!
Wait… oh shit.
STOP MAKING ME FEEL SO MANY THINGS. ;__;
ACTUALLY YOU KNOW WHAT, WHILE I’M HERE, HAVE ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT.
As some of you may or may not know, pronouns in Japanese work very differently from pronouns in English.
Before he makes the bet, Seishirou refers to Subaru using ‘kimi.’ After the bet he switches to using ‘anata,’ which continues right the way through X until his very final words which are ‘Boku wa… kimi wo…’ where he obviously switches back to ‘kimi’ one last time.
It’s one of those things that doesn’t really translate at all, given that there isn’t really any way to communicate that in English but yeah. You could interpret the symbolism there a couple of ways, but I’ll leave that up to you guys.
YOU SHUT UP. YOU STOP BREAKING MY HEART WITH THESE PARALLELS AND SHUT UP RIGHT NOW, SOB.
Hi! I love your tumblr and NOW YOU ARE READING RAYEARTH which is my favourite thing ever~ And you were asked about translations, and I have, uh, lots, so! I thought. I would make that an excuse for flailing at you!
(I’m too english to feel like I should just flail without an excuse? XD)
There are three english versions: an old (flipped) Tokyopop version, the re-translated un-flipped version they did as a 10 year anniversary, and a new Dark Horse Comics version which is in two omnibuses, and they all have some interesting translation choices? XD I’d pick one of the non-flipped ones, just because they haven’t buggered about with the sound effects, but I fell in love with the original version back when I first bought it, so~
anyway THANK YOU! I love all your art reblogging, it’s glorious!
And, aahhhh, I’m so surprised at how much MKR discussion this has all sparked! Absolutely delighted, of course, it’s a darling series and it’s wonderful to have others to talk about it with, but I never got the impression that it was one of the major series in CLAMP fandom? Maybe I just never sought it out as much before….
Part of me still feels badly that I’ve let it linger for so long—I mean, what kind of CLAMP fan am I, really—but also kind of happy at the way it’s turning out, because I love getting to keep CLAMP fans and CLAMP discussion in my fannish life!
*wistful* I love all these CLAMP omnibuses that are being put out lately, if only they would do one for Tokyo Babylon, that would make my life complete. I’m kind of desperately hoping they’ll do it after they finish X, but, ugh, my wallet is crying already—even if they are totally reasonably priced.
I just fanmailed instead of replying to your previous post I DON’T KNOW WHY I DID THAT but I’m sat next to all three english versions of Rayearth and the and they’re all fairly okay, though all of them have their interesting, uh, choices on occasion! However anyone wants to reply is fine with me! Fanmail is nice for being able to write longer notes, instead of asks, I have DEFINITELY found and I think everyone knows that the long-winded is strong with this blog.
I’m relieved to hear that all three versions of okay (if not perfect, because we always want perfect translations), so that I won’t get stuck with one really disasterous one! (I have MKR II v1 as TokyoPop’s unflipped versions, but not v2 or v3, so I’ll likely end up reading those as the original flipped versions.) And sometimes this reminds me just how glad I am at just how far commercial manga translations really have come!

Thoughts on Lois Lane’s place in the DCnU.
therearecertainshadesoflimelight:
therearecertainshadesoflimelight:
This is a story about how and why Lois Lane’s role in the Superman mythology has been and is being systematically diminished. You see, once upon a time there was a female character called Lois Lane; Lois Lane was an unusual female character at that time because she was a rare example of a woman who not only worked within a male-dominated field but excelled at it, and an ‘intellectual’ field at that: journalism. Lois had to overcome barriers of sexism to prove to her male boss, her co-workers, and the audience that she was just as good and even better than her rival, Clark Kent (who, lest we forget, has superpowers, so it was not exactly a level playing field) — and she was: she was just as good a journalist as Superman himself.
Now, in the 1930s and the 1940s, the white men who were privileged by the patriarchy and derived their privilege from the systematic oppression of women were so privileged and had bought into their own lies about female competence so completely that they were, as a group, incapable of conceiving of the idea that women (as a group) could ever find any great success in working in (white) male-dominated careers like journalism — they could barely even conceive of the idea that significant numbers of women could want to. Thus Lois herself was a non-threat, as far as they were concerned: she was that woman who was “not like those other women”; she was allowed to exist and allowed to be awesome because her existence and her awesomeness was no threat to white male assumed superiority.
Later on, in the 1950s and the 1960s things began to change for women. The men who had felt so secure in their ivory tower were beginning to see cracks in the base of it: they were no longer so assured of their superiority or of the indifference of women to the idea of success and competence outside of traditionally female roles. It became more important to the security of the patriarchy as a power structure that characters like Lois were put in their place — in order to remind women in general of where their place was. “A woman could never be that competent, that smart, or that perceptive!” they said to themselves (having bought into their own mythology of feminine inferiority for so long), “Nor must women be allowed to think themselves competent, smart, or perceptive.”
This idea that no woman could be as awesome as 1930s Lois had been began to manifest culturally; men started selectively reading the character to bring her into line with the myth of who they thought she must be, which was someone “so blind she never even noticed that Clark Kent and Superman were one and the same!” In time, people became convinced that this was who Lois had always been; even women bought into the idea: Lois Lane was invented in the 1930s, therefore she must have been a misogynistic stereotype. We were encouraged to view rejection of Lois Lane as a feminist act (just as we were encouraged to reject our own femininity and womanhood as ‘unfeminist’).
Thus the idea that Lois was always incompetent, shrewish, and ‘blind’ — in short that Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane is a full and valid representation of who she is and has always been as a character — became a cultural meme which continues to inform the way she is written and commented upon today. Any piece of media which does not conform to this stereotype is thrown out as ‘uncharacteristic’ of Lois, regardless of the fact that when all is said and done a vanishingly small proportion of the portrayals of Lois over the years even approach the way she is characterised in popular culture.
Now, in 2011, we see a female character who was a role model to millions shunted off to the background and we’re told that this is where she has always belonged; we will be treated to a love triangle between Lois, Clark, and some third party which will underline Lois’s lack of perception — and we will be told that this is in line with her portrayal through the generations (regardless of the fact that Lois is the only one who actually did notice that Clark was Superman); we will see her marginalised and used to present one more iteration of the meme that “women don’t like nice guys” — and if we complain, no doubt we will be told that this has been done under the pretext of “feminism”, as if there were no feminist way to write Lois, and as if removing female characters from a given narrative (or diminishing their roles and essentialising them as love interests when they had previously filled a variety of different niches) could ever be a feminist act.

This is a post that was written a few months ago by ghostsontv. But it’s a really, really good post. And it deserves to see the light again as we approach the one year anniversary of the official announcement of the DCnU.
I think a similar analysis could be made for other progressive female characters who started out quite strongly, but modern fans write off their earlier appearances as having been sexist because of the time they were created.
So modern writers can get away with doing things like treating Wonder Woman as a sex object, because everyone KNOWS her original tales were just sex fantasies and had no other value. They get away with taking Star Sapphire and making her into a man-hating madwoman just a decade after she was a playful ally, and rewriting the entire concept as a story about how love makes women insane! They get away with having the Scarlet Witch go womb crazy and be retconned as a frightened, helpless thing protected by her brother even though she was a force to be reckoned with back in 1964, because it was 1964 and she must have been a delicate flower. And making her weak-willed is justified as being true to her roots.
And they get away with it, because even many of the fans who defend female portrayals don’t look back at the earlier stuff to see what we’ve lost, to see that no, there was more to some of these characters from the start.
I think what burns me the most about this kind of thing is that so often these characters are “handled” by men and then women are TOLD that the changes that are made to these characters are actually for their own good or “more feminist.”
For example, we can look at the Perez era Wonder Woman wherein we were literally told that Wonder Woman was almost above love—wherein Wonder Woman’s canon love interest was removed from her narrative, in part, because it was unacceptable for a powerful woman like Diana to be in love with a human male. As if that was below her. As if the only way that she could prove her incredible power and be an equal to her male superhero counterparts was to reject the concept of love with a human male. As if feminism could ever be defined under such narrow terms. In turn, this then developed into this insane “The Amazons are all man haters” ridiculous stereotype that people seem to repeat over and over again. In turn, we get writers thinking that they are writing Diana as “strong” when they present the Amazons as violent towards men when, in reality, they have so completely misunderstood and botched the concept of “female strength” that it makes me physically sick.
Ironically, 25 years after DC did this to Wonder Woman, we got a similar commentary on Lois Lane when the DCnU hit. Grant Morrison literally said that Lois was “stronger” now that she “wasn’t tied to a man.” And I’ve seen people try to argue that the complete and utter destruction of the Supermarriage might be a good thing for Lois Lane because “now she can be that strong woman rejecting Clark again while he pines for her and she doesn’t notice him.” Let’s put aside the fact that this reinforces a sexist “women don’t fall for nice guys” narrative that it took decades for Lois to FINALLY overcome. But the idea that a woman needs to ditch the man she loves to be strong again is just insane. There were literally creators I respect making this kind of argument.
Excuse me…but are you fucking kidding me with this stuff?
I can’t believe that in the year 2012 there are people who still don’t seem to comprehend that there is a huge difference between a woman needing a man and WANTING a man and that a woman does not lose her strength, agency, personal power or feminist appeal if she chooses of her own agency to commit to a man (or woman) that she LOVES. Breaking up a happy marriage (which the Supermarriage was) should NEVER ever be used as an argument for feminism. It’s not. It’s a huge, huge misconception about what it means to be a “strong woman.”
Yet, in an industry that continues to be dominated by men who are either pushing 50 or over 50, we continue to be told on varying levels that these choices are actually “good” things for these powerful female characters and that they are the more “feminist” choice.
Now, it’s hard to say how that “strong women don’t need a man” bullshit is going to play out with Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor now that Steve has been introduced back in the books. Time will tell. Time will tell.
It always amazed me with Steve, how they argue that he weakens her. How they say it’s pathetic that she falls in love with the first man she meets. (Because yeah, having the GODDESS OF LOVE as a patroness doesn’t indicate she might have some pretty good luck in that area.) And then they turn around and do shit like have her first crush in Man’s World be on the only guy who can beat her in a fight. They hook her up with Batman so that he can give her neat stuff like her own secret identity and the Invisible Jet. They try mortal love interests who TURN HER DOWN when she approaches them at first because they assume she’s a snob.
Really, there is just a litany of things they did post-Crisis that were so much more fucked up than the idea that a dude crashes on an island with no dudes, and one of the women starts a romance with him (and Steve’s time on the island can be stretched to as long as they want to establish one) that I can’t believe the hoops jumped through to justify it.
It all just comes down to “Yeah, we like how this settles in better so surely that means she’s stronger” without even stopping to think that maybe, just maybe, the reason it seems better to them might be because it conforms to long-held sexist assumptions in our culture. Because that woman who was so intimidating to them, who made them uncomfortable with the amount of power and importance she held, is now torn down, roped in, put in her place.
Can I just take a moment to talk about how amazing Usagi is in the Black Moon arc?
So… keeping in mind that she is on a strange planet, being overwhelmed with this dark energy, separated from her loved ones and having to deal with some pretty disturbing encounters with Prince Dimande…
Look at what she does, immediately after discovering that she was in the one spot where she would be able to transform:
First just look at her expression there. She doesn’t even care about anything at all except finding her friends.
She somehow is able to sense where her friends are simply by touching the ground. And this is someone who was completely out of breath after walking a few feet just a few minutes ago.
Not only is she able to sense where they are, but she is able to send energy to them through the ground and the stone dungeon that apparently absorbs all life. She even gives them the power to transform. And check out all the damage she did to the ground.
Yeah.
She is SO AMAZING.
I am ridiculously anxious for my copy to get here already, the wait feels like it’s going to be forever!
I really love Usagi in this arc because she overcomes so much terror and uncertainty. She finds strength in the support of her friends and the one she loves, but it’s her own heart that’s steadied and allows her to access her power. No matter how much Demand terrified her and tried to chain her down, she wouldn’t be broken. She was afraid, but she still found the strength in her heart to stand up again and come back.
Ahhhh, I just love her so much, too!
Every kind of nerdery imaginable.: leareth replied to your photo: Reasons I hate you all, re: Tokyo...
I disagree on Seishirou knowing what Sibaru feels for him, since a) Subaru at this point doesn’t know himself, b) Subaru’s problem of treating everyone as special therefore no one is special.I think I’m…
I’d say more about Subaru not knowing what he feels but you’ll understand when you get to that chapter of the manga much later on. Suffice to say that no, Subaru doesn’t realize his feelings right now, and even Hokuto while she may suspect (rightly, as she does) doesn’t realize just how strong those feelings are until later. Right now at this point in time the whole thing about Subaru and Seishirou being together is a fun joke to everyone. If Subaru and Hokuto don’t know I can’t see how Seishirou does, particularly as we all know, he doesn’t experience emotion.
And that’s where I think the general fandom understanding of him can fall down. Seishirou is very, very good at his mask and portraying himself as a powerful enigma, but knowing what emotions do to people and actually understanding emotions, why they against all logic make people do crazy things, that’s a different matter.
(I also have my own thing about its not as simple as the Sakurazukamori is incapable of feeling emotion, especially when you compare to say, Nataku, rather it’s that the Sakurazukamori is incapable of feeling empathy, but that’s a discussion for another day/fic.)
One thing I definitely want to (eventually!) get into is looking at Seishirou’s character because I’ve always thought that a lot of fandom’s understanding of him felt lacking to me, especially on how he views emotion. But, at the same time, it’s interesting to see how much my own views have been colored by fandom as well! So, I’m trying to be as hyper observant as I can, while still simply enjoying the manga I’m reading, but that means I may get a little too up in my head sometimes.
Personally, I’ve always leaned towards the idea that Seishirou’s lack of emotions isn’t necessarily because he’s the Sakurazukamori. I always assumed that he was raised to be a sociopath (maybe not deliberately, but…), that either he was born with some fucked up brain chemistry or else he could have been normal but was neglected/abused and turned out this way. I don’t think we know a lot about his childhood, other than that his mother seemed to be pretty fucked up, too. (But I’m not sure if she actually raised him?) At any rate, I’ve never thought of Seishirou’s disposition as being otherworldly or anything, just fucked up in a way that real people sometimes get fucked up.
WHY DO I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS DRAMA BRB DOWNLOADING NOW PLZ PLZ TRANSLATE.Reasons I hate you all, re: Tokyo Babylon:
» Hokuto’s dream for the future almost made me tear up a little. She was practicing for her future, she had a dream for that future, and she’s never going to get to do it. Hokuto never gets to finish growing up.
» Seishirou just sitting there, as they’re talking about cute things or how Subaru always wears those gloves, even when he’s sleeping, and everyone is flirting with Subaru, and Hokuto is teasing Subaru about being in love with a Sakurazuka. And he just keeps sitting there, a pleasant look on his face. All the while, he’s a monster on the inside.
He must know exactly why Subaru wears those gloves. He knows exactly the reason why Sumeragi Subaru should be wary of the Sakurazuka family. He has to know how Subaru obviously feels about him, that Subaru is indeed in love with a Sakurazuka, with the most dangerous of his family. And he just keeps smiling pleasantly, all the while, he could either eat his breakfast or break Subaru in half, he could do both with the same amount of ease.
ALL WHILE PRECIOUS DARLING SUBARU IS IN LOVE WITH HIM ALREADY.
Fuck all of you, I hate you for putting me through this.Funnily enough Hokuto’s ambitions come up again in the OVA2 audio drama (WHICH I’M GONNA TRANSLATE PROPERLY AT SOME POINT I SWEAR.)
The girl she’s talking to asks her what her dream for the future is, she says she wants to be a housewife but that it may well not end up happening because ‘the end is drawing closer’ & she’s sure things can’t stay like they are at the moment forever. The girl asks what she’s talking about & she’s like OH NOTHING.
Also this entire audio drama starts off with her throwing Seishirou & Subaru a tea party & she talks about how she got up at 5am to prepare everything & bake & clean & oh god sorry EXCUSE ME WHILST I DISSOLVE INTO A PUDDLE OF FEELS.
You probably don’t know about it because… there’s hardly any information on it out there at all! Fortunately for me, the day I discovered it existed there was a copy up on eBay so I bought it, aw yeah.
I’m pretty sure I wrote a summary of it a while back but I can’t be bothered to find it so HAVE ANOTHER SUMMARY, WHICH WILL BE FROM MEMORY SO EXCUSE PARAPHRASING, RAMBLING, BIAS TOWARDS SEISUB MOMENTS ETC:
So like I said Hokuto throws a tea party for the boys, she invites them to her apartment & she’s baked an apple pie. There’s this one noteworthy moment when Seishirou & Subaru are off having their own little conversation whilst she’s doing something, she accuses them of like… flirting? The Japanese is いちゃいちゃ, it can mean like flirting or making out or GENERALLY BEING GROSS & COUPLY idk if there’s an equivalent word in English. So Seishirou’s like ‘No, if I were doing that I’d get Subaru on the floor like this… then get on top of him like this…’ LIKE HE ACTUALLY PINS SUBARU DOWN & GETS ON TOP OF HIM. Then Subaru’s voice goes up like eleventy million octaves & he whimpers & it’s the most moe thing in the universe. Seishirou then asks if he’s too heavy, Subaru’s like ‘No… it’s not that…’ so Seishirou resolves to do push-ups from now on so he won’t end up being a burden on Subaru in any situations like this that may arise in the future. Subaru has no idea what push-ups have to do with Seishirou being on top of him because he is a precious innocent baby.
SO ANYWAY Hokuto’s about to make tea, Subaru asks for milk in his, then she realises THERE’S NO MILK LEFT. This has thrown her entire party into disarray, WHAT KIND OF A HOSTESS CAN’T GIVE HER GUESTS THE TEA THEY WANT. So she goes out to get some. Whilst she’s rushing off to the shops she bumps into this girl who falls over & hurts her leg. They end up at Mister Donut chatting, & it transpires this girl has run away from home because she wants to be a seiyuu but her mother’s opposed to it & thinks she should focus on reality rather than pipe dreams. Hokuto says she likes anime around this point WHICH BREAKS MY HEART BECAUSE SHE NEVER WOULD HAVE LIVED TO SEE THE ENDING OF SAILOR MOON, I BET SHE WOULD HAVE LOVED SAILOR MOON WITH ITS FLAWLESS CAST OF SIMILARLY BADASS LADIES. Sob. But back to my summary… Hokuto gives the girl A+ advice, says that obviously her mother is concerned about her but it’s her life & if she’s thought things through properly & is determined then she should give her dream her all.
MEANWHILE Seishirou & Subaru are back at the apartment, Hokuto called them about why she’d been held up, Subaru is blaming himself like ‘OH GOD THIS ENTIRE THING HAPPENED WITH THE GIRL GETTING HER LEG HURT BECAUSE I ASKED FOR MILK.’ Seishirou says he blames himself for things too much because he’s ‘kind’ then they have a ‘Seishirou-san…’ ‘Subaru-kun…’ moment WHICH HOKUTO INTERRUPTS. She’s brought her new friend back with her since she can’t see a doctor because she’s run away from home, so the plan is Seishirou can take a look at her leg because he’s a vet which is CLOSE ENOUGH. It ends with the girl saying ‘My name is…’ MUCH LIKE WITH GAIJIN GIRL. In fact the entire audio drama is very similar to that chapter but whatever, we get some glorious Seisub moments. Still bitter they never drew them.
WELL. SO I NEEDED THIS ON MY BLOG FOREVER AND EVER.
SCREAMING AT THE SxS MOMENTS. (And gross sobbing over Hokuto, but that’s a given.)

I am going to look at all the prophetic dreams and hints for Hokuto’s future and possible knowledge of them a little differently now and, clearly, SOB ALL THE HARDER AT THEM, fuck you, CLAMP.
I know this is a lot of text on the sidebar. Please bear with me, as it'll answer a lot of the questions you might have about me or this tumblr.
